Taking some time to find yourself..

Everyone always talks about “finding yourself” and it’s a concept I struggled to comprehend for a long time. But just this past few days, I have discovered that it is one of the most important things you can do.

Currently, I’m staying in the middle of nowhere with a few friends, and one bar of reception. Maybe this post won’t even go through, but who knows…

Even though it’s only been a day, I have felt a noticeable change in my overall wellbeing, just from taking some time to go fishing and get away from the busy life I have in town.

As I’ve mentioned before, I’m a strong advocate for managing time and prioritising, but I decided that a few days away wouldn’t be wasted, especially during this time of the year. I think everyone can benefit from “getting away,” even if it’s just once a year.

Today I look forward to more relaxation, in the form of fishing and a trip to the sand dunes.

What do you think about this? Leave me a comment.

  1. Absolutely.

In fact, Barb and I bought 10 1/4 acres atop the New Mexico Rockies nearly 20 years ago just for that purpose. There is no water, no power, no shelter. Just Junipers, antelope, and mule deer. We took our pickup camper with water and a solar panel and we stayed sometime for a few weeks. Closest neighbor is a half mile away. We’ve grown too old to enjoy it anymore – doctors and pills – but it sure worked for more than a decade, so we’ve been trying to sell it for a year.

As for pen and paper. I use a pencil. A pencil provides me with the mental assurance that I could go back and change something if I wanted, though I seldom do. I begin with the words “I don’t know what to write. The subjects are all over the place. Eventually something worthwhile drops out of the end of that pencil and I’m good to go. I’ve been doing this for more than 50 years and it still works.

  2. Interesting story. Sounds like an incredible, isolated retreat you have there! I’ve always been an advocate for hand writing notes and ideas as opposed to typing them- they feel more genuine that way.
Thanks for sharing your experiences. 🙂
